Global Warming Vs Climate Change

What is going on with our weather?  I’m sure most of you are waking up this morning and shaking your heads saying, “Isn’t it April 14th?”  I suppose if we lived in the UP of Michigan, we would not think twice about snow in April!  But this is the Midwest!  Ugh!!

When I was little, Easter time was always sunny and warm.  My sisters and I wore our cute matching dresses, white anklets, white shoes and pretty hats to Church on Easter Day!  We couldn’t wait to get home from Church and run around outside!

Something in the weather department has changed over the years!  The grass is still getting greener, the tulips and daffodils are starting to bloom and the trees are full of buds!  The weather has different plans.  Our Spring seems to last forever with rain, snow and cooler than normal temperatures!  Our Summer seems to be very short and Fall seems like it lasts longer than before!  Don’t get me started about the length of our Winter! It’s as if we have only 2 seasons – Spring and Winter!

One source says that our global warming is an unprecedented type of climate change – we are having side effects to our environment!  Changes in sea levels, glaciers melting and changes in our temperatures!  There’s a lot of debate going on in regards to Global Warming Vs. Climate Change!  I think we can all agree that something is definitely changing!

Whatever the season or weather – it’s always a good time for

Suzy’s Swirl!

My Nod to Kathy Lee Gifford

My Nod to Kathy Lee Gifford

For the past 11 years I have enjoyed watching Kathy Lee and Hoda on the 4th hour of the Today Show!  Their genuine friendship, compassion for others and wit shined through on each show!  This past Friday, April 5th was Kathy Lee’s last show with Hoda! The today show has been celebrating Kathy Lee for the past several months!  Some may wonder what is the big deal!

I do not know Kathy Lee personally, but what I saw of her on the Today Show, I believe we could be best friends!  First and fore most she lives and breathes her Faith and does not apologize for it!  She has shown the world that when life does not go your way, you find a new way!  At the age of 65 she is excited to start a new chapter of her life!

Kathy Lee shows us that after great loss, you still have many chapters of your life to live!  Granted it is not easy!  We all do not have the means that Kathy Lee has!  Just like her, though, we have choices we can make!  You can choose to bury your head in the sand or you can hold your head up high and believe in yourself and the God Lord above!

Kathy Lee may not be everybody’s cup of tea!  I do hope we are all open enough to embrace and be excited for all of the possibilities that each chapter of lives will bring!  I will miss you Kathy Lee!                  Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord.

April Fool’s Day

Tomorrow will be April 1st – April Fool’s Day!  When did April 1st become April Fool’s Day?  Why is this day filled with funny practical jokes and silliness?  Some research says it dates back to Geoffrey Chaucer’s, The Canterbury Tales.  Other research says it was a way of celebrating the changing of the seasons!

However, it became to be – April 1st is a day of practical jokes!  There are some jokes that can be very funny – a hallway full of cups of water, toothpaste filled Oreo’s and a bowl full of m&m’s, skittles and reeses pieces or freaking out your teenage kids by telling them you are pregnant!  That last one always got my kids!  LOL!

To me April 1st is such a happy day of the year!  There’s more sunlight to each day, the trees are starting to bud and the robins are chirping away!  April 1st is a sign that winter is over and spring is on its way! I also happen to love April because it’s my birthday month, along with my son’s too!

Start off April with a fun and silly practical joke!  Enjoy the month full of April Showers that bring May Flowers!  Take a moment to listen to the birds chirping and look for your flowers to start blooming!

Staycation vs. Vacation

This is the week of Spring Break for so many of us!  Thus the big dilemma of Staycation vs. Vacation!  What are the pros and cons of both?  Which one will you choose?  If you could pick any place to Vacation, where would you go?

If you have decided to enjoy a Staycation, I hope you make time to relax!  Catch up on that book you’ve been wanting to read, make an appointment for a pedicure and treat yourself to a fruity drink with an umbrella!  I’ve also taken this time to do some spring cleaning!  It’s a great feeling to weed out your closets and that dreaded junk drawer!  Maybe even unplug from all electronics for a few days!  Enjoy your Family!

Vacation’s away for Spring Break are equally fun too!  The anticipation of traveling to a new state or country is exciting! Looking forward to sticking your toes in the warm sand and listening to ocean waves is so relaxing!  Plus, having a few days of not cooking and cleaning is the best! It’s a big wide world out there, it’s exciting to go and explore!

Of course, there are always cons to both!  You can’t make everyone happy!  We are sure we can make everyone happy at Suzy’s Swirl! Make sure you plan some time to enjoy your Spring Break with us at Suzy’s!  We are Swirling Super Spring Flavors!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Sundaes with Sue

Who is St. Patrick and why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

History.com says that St. Patrick was born in Roman, Britain and was brought to Ireland as a slave when he was 16.  He then escaped, returned to Ireland and was credited for bringing Christianity to its people!  He died on March 17, 461

Since the 9thor 10thcentury, people in Ireland have been observing the Roman Catholic Feast Day of St. Patrick on March 17th.  The first actual St. Patrick’s Day parade wasn’t in Ireland; it was actually in the United States.  On March 17, 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the streets of New York.  They were singing Irish songs and connecting back to their Irish Roots!

St. Patrick’s Day will always be a special day for me!  Part is because I am Irish!  The other part is because it is the day I became engaged to Joe!  On March 17th, 1983 (I’m aging myself) there was a snowstorm, my parents were flying home from a trip overseas and Joe decided this was the day!  Joe’s side of the family is Italian, but he always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day like he as an Irishman.  At an Italian restaurant, in the middle of a snowstorm, on St. Patrick’s Day – I said Yes!

May your troubles be less and your blessings be more and nothing but Happiness come through your door!

Daylight Savings Time

Sundaes with Sue

Finally, an extra hour of daylight!  Does anyone really know why we Spring ahead in the Spring?  Some research says it was Benjamin Franklin’s idea to conserve candles.  In fact, the United States has been using Daylight Savings Time on and off since 1918 for wartime reasons.  Finally, in 2007, it was proposed to “spring ahead” on the 2nd Sunday in March and to “fall back” on the 1st Sunday in November.

Let’s look at the positives of DST – we all get an extra hour of daylight! That extra hour of daylight is truly a boost for our mental health!  After eating a lot of heavy comfort foods all winter, we can now try lighter and brighter meals!  Of course more Vitamin D!  Say good bye to dull and dry hair and skin! Let’s all get out and say hi to our neighbors again and take a walk!  I personally, love this day!

I suggest you use your extra hour of daylight and come into Suzy’s Swirl! We are swirling some sensational spring flavors!

Pineapple Whip, Mint Chip, Orange, Greek Tart, just to name a few – don’t they just make your mouth water!  No matter what time of day or night it is, it’s always a good time for Suzy’s Swirl!

Spring is upon us – only 23 more days until March 20th! On this day, they say the length of daytime and nighttime are nearly the same!  I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to Spring!

With each change of the yearly seasons, it also makes me take pause to look at the changes of the seasons in our lives!  Try thinking of your life, like the 4 seasons of the year!

Spring is the beginning of life – babies, weddings, jobs, homes…

Summer is the fun and sun – teenagers, dances, college time…

Fall is the changing of colors – travel and downsizing……

Winter is crisp and sparkling white – retirement and relaxation..

Whatever season of your life that you are in, it has ups and downs. Always know that no one season lasts forever!  Your babies do grow out of diapers, your teenagers do learn how to drive and we all grow up!  I think the key is to find the positive to each season!

Remember Spring is only 23 days away!  Enjoy each season of your life and don’t forget to smell the roses along the way!

Happy Spring!

Swirling Greatness!  Kathy was also a featured Speaker of Inspiration! Kathy along with, John O’Leary, Mindfulness and Merlot and Milo Cress were high energy, inspirational and motivating!

We heard such thought provoking phrases and questions such as; Why me?  What more can I do?  Great Cups Great Causes, Take 5 minutes each day to reflect, To be Mindful, Importance of Connectivity, Your best days are in front of You, We all have a Story, Love, Live Inspired…..   I left the conference being inspired both personally and professionally!

HAPPY Anniversary

Sundaes with Sue

Anniversaries are the recurrence of a date marking a notable event!  I think we always first think of a Wedding Anniversary!  Did you know the gift for a 1st year Wedding Anniversary is Paper or a Clock? Of course, most of us know that a 25th Wedding Anniversary or Silver Anniversary the gift would be Silver and a 50thWedding Anniversary or Golden Anniversary is Gold!  A notable way to celebrate amazing dates!

This January 29th my parents would have celebrated 64 years of marriage! Unfortunately, they passed away over 20 years ago!  Could you imagine being married to someone for 64 years??  To think that two people have spent more than half of their lives together!  Oh, the wonderful things they have seen, as well as, the heart breaks too!  It is a true blessing for those that have loved and survived each other for so many years!

Anniversaries can also be the date marking a new job, a new home or sadly, the death of a loved one, all are dates marking a notable event.  The days go by so fast and suddenly you stop to look at the calendar or you get a google alert to remind you of a special date!  No matter what the notable event might be, it’s important to stop and remember the dates meaning to you!

Just in case you were wondering, if you are lucky enough to be married 65 years, the gift for a 65th Wedding Anniversary is a Blue Sapphire!

Happy 64th Wedding Anniversary Mom and Dad!

May God Bless all of You on Your Special Anniversaries!

Snow Days

Sundaes with Sue

Do you remember the blizzard of 1967?  In January of 1967 in a two-day span, Chicago and the suburbs were hit with 23 inches of snow!  I was just a small child, (LOL) I really was, I remember the snow came up to the top of our shed!  We could walk over our fence because there was so much snow!  Of course we had a snow day!

Back in the day, to see if you were going to have a Snow Day, you had to get up early and watch WGN to see if your school was listed.  Snow Days meant staying home, playing in the snow and drinking homemade hot chocolate with marshmallows!  Snow days also meant you had an extra day to play with your Mom and Dad!

How will you spend your next Snow Day?  Will you stay in your pj’s all day and watch movies?  Maybe you will finally try that new recipe you’ve been too busy to try!  Watching each unique snowflake fall from the sky and rolling them all into a snowman is a wonderful option too!

Life in Review

 Sundaes with Sue

These past few weeks at Suzy’s Swirl our team has been working on adding new content and updating our website!  In reviewing all of our pictures and posts, so much has happened in 7 years!

I have been given the opportunity to ponder a few things, some personal some not! First and foremost, I will always have short hair, I’m not going to bother trying to grow it out, short hair is my thing!  Now that that has been decided, I was reminded of so many other happenings at Suzy’s Swirl!

Our first group of Swirlers have graduated college and some have moved onto grad school!  We have hosted so many FUNdraisers for our community!  We were on Chicago’s Best with Brittany Payton for our Big Joe eating challenge!  (You can still see the interview and challenge on our Facebook page).  We have had numerous Girl Scout Troops earn their Small Business and Entrepreneur Badge!  There is so much more to come in 2019!

We all get so busy in our day to day life!  Every now and then it’s healthy to stop and reflect on our relationships, our lives both personal and professional.  When we stop to reflect it helps us provide insights into where we are going and who we want to be traveling with!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Everyone!  We are 6 days into the beginning of 2019!

How’s it going for you?  Are you excited about all of the possibilities this year can bring?  Are you stressed out by everything that has to be done this year?  As I like to say, “focus on one event at a time – don’t get too overwhelmed by everything and always remember, this is just a moment in time!”

I have always thought of the New Year as an automatic re-set button. It’s like I’m breathing in this fresh air for the first time and the chaotic-ness of the holidays is over, the clouds have parted and I can see clearly again!  I try to eat healthier, work out a bit more, get to bed earlier and be on time more!

I’m really excited about 2019!  My daughter Jen will turn 30 and my other daughter Julie will turn 21! Suzy’s Swirl is going to be celebrating its 5th Birthday this year too! Many, many, many more exciting possibilities at the store too!  I am definitely going to be celebrating this year!

I hope you will continue to celebrate all things big and small with us at Suzy’s Swirl!  I am excited about all of the new and exciting possibilities for the New Year! Don’t worry, we’ve got 359 more days to figure out 2019 – don’t be stressed – stressed backwards is Desserts!

Good Bye 2018 – Hello 2019

Sundaes with Sue

On this last Sunday of 2018, many of us are getting ready to ring in the New Year of 2019!  Many of us may be reflecting on all that happened this year!  Then automatically thinking about what our New Year’s Resolutions for 2019 will be!

There are a few statistics out there about how successful people are with New Year’s Resolutions! One statistic says that 53% of Americans resolve to save more money in the New Year and another says that 40% of Americans resolve to lose weight or get in better shape!  Another statistic says that only 8% of Americans are successful with their New Year’s Resolutions! Yikes, so what are we all supposed to do???

I suggest, trying a different way to set yourself up for success this 2019! Maybe a simple “reset” to your current goals and ambitions!  Give yourself some flexibility with your resolutions!  You may not be able to save $100.00 each week, but maybe you can save $25.00 each week!  Try to work out, maybe twice a week vs. each day!   Then as time goes on, you can figure out how to reach your goals vs. doing it all at once!

A New Year’s Resolution that doesn’t cost you anything or take up any extra time is to just Be Kind to Others!  Done and Done!

As 2018 comes to an end and 2019 begins, Suzy’s Swirl wants to say Thank You to all of our great customers, supporters, family and friends!

It never goes unnoticed that you have chosen Suzy’s Swirl and we are grateful!  Suzy’s Swirl Wishes All of You a Happy and Healthy New Year!

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

SUNDAES WITH SUE

We have 2 more days until the Jolly Fellow in the Red Suit arrives! Hopefully, you have everything ready to go and you can take a few minutes to relax!  If you are like me, you might still be scrambling to get that last minute gift, bake one more batch of cookies and get the house cleaned!

I have found over the years that Christmas has become more about spending time with friends and family vs over the top perfect gifts!  A couple of years ago I told my kids that I am going to treat them like Baby Jesus at Christmas!  They each are going to get 3 gifts, just like Baby Jesus did!  Of course, I add a few little things, it seems to be working!

I have also become like my mother at the holidays!  When my kids ask me what I would like for Christmas, I say, “Peace on Earth and Goodwill for Al!”  But it is really true!  Don’t we all want that??

Enjoy these next few days of wonder and excitement!  Try not to get too overwhelmed!  If you need a last minute stocking stuffer, Suzy’s Swirl Gift Cards are the perfect idea!

Christmas Traditions

Merriam-Webster Dictionary has one of the definitions of Tradition as, the handing down of information, beliefs and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction.

Each year my Mom would make Christmas Cookies!  She used the recipes from her Mom’s Sugar Cookies, White Meringue with Mint Chips and Spritz Cookies!  My sister’s and I have continued this Tradition.  Each Christmas Eve, the Italian side of my family, has a dinner that includes the 7 fishes! I have a friend that makes Oyster Soup on Christmas Eve, just like her Great-Grandparents did!

On Christmas morning, before anyone could go downstairs, my dad would have to go downstairs first!  He had to make sure that Santa had left the house and everything was ok!  I have continued that tradition, even now that my kids are all in their 20’s!

Traditions are a wonderful way for us to bring those memories of the past and celebrate them in the present! What are your Christmas Traditions? What will you hand down to the next generation? Whatever they may be, I hope they bring peace, joy and a smile to your face during this Christmas Season!

Thanksgiving Blessings

As we approach Thanksgiving this week let’s all take a moment to reflect on what we are Thankful for! For me this year Thanksgiving has a new added element to it! I am personally Thankful that my sons, who live in Chico California, are safe and did not loose their home! They voluntarily evacuated their home, they packed up all that was valuable to them and moved to a safer area!

These fires in California, have given me a new perspective this Thanksgiving! What’s really important to me! It has made me look around my house and decide what I would take at a split seconds notice! What could you fit in your car and drive off with, knowing that you may never see your home again! Is it pictures, clothes, jewelry, baby books of my kids….. The thought of this makes me stop and take pause!

Way too many families in California had to do this last week! It will be 2 weeks this Thanksgiving, that hundreds of families in California lost their homes! At the same time, so many families are still searching for loved ones and hoping and praying that they will be found at one of the many evacuation centers!

This Thanksgiving as you gather with your family and friends be Thankful for all that you have! Try to keep your struggles and minor annoyances in perspective! When you say Grace before you dig into that perfectly browned turkey, say an extra prayer for all of the families in California!

Suzy’s Swirl wishes You and Your Families a Happy Thanksgiving!
